A Unified Semantics for Active and Deductive Databases

چکیده

These two rule-oriented paradigms of databases have been the focus of extensive research and are now coming of age in the commercial DBMS world. However, the systems developed so far support well only one of the two paradigms|thus limiting the eeectiveness of such systems in many applications that require complete integration of both kinds of rules. In this paper, we discuss the technical problems that make such an integration diicult, and trace their roots to a lack of a uniied underlying semantics. Then, we review recent advances in the semantics of non-monotonic logic and show that they can be used to unify the foundations of active databases and deductive databases. Finally, we outline the design a new rule language for databases that integrates a deductive system with a trigger-based DBMS.

A Simple Model for Active Rules and their Behavior in Deductive Databases

Recent advances in non-monotonic semantics of deductive databases provide a simple framework for modeling the even-condition-action rules of active databases. This approach unifies the semantics of active and deductive databases and yields several benefits. In particular it can be used to model the semantics of different active databases and to perform termination analysis for active rules.

Declarative Semantics for Active Rules

In this paper we analyze declarative deterministic and non-deterministic semantics for active rules. In particular we consider several (partial) stable model semantics, previously defined for deductive rules, such as well-founded, max deterministic, unique total stable model, total stable model, and maximal stable model semantics. The semantics of an active program AP is given by first rewritin...

Active-U-Datalog: Integrating Active Rules in a Logical Update Language

Deductive database technology represents an important step towards the goal of developing highly-declarative database programming languages. In order to make deductive databases a practical technology, deductive rules have to be extended to provide a dynamic behavior. In particular, current applications require not only a support for updates and transactions but also the ability to automaticall...

1 Active Behaviour in Deductive Databases 30 March 1996

This paper reports work in progress on active and deductive databases. Active rules are used for a variety of purposes, prominent amongst which are integrity enforcement, view maintenance and actions output to the environment. In this paper we argue that a package of deductive databases, temporal reasoning, integrity enforcement and abduction captures and possibly extends the first two main use...
